Almost everyone has a decisive moment in life. For many in China, particularly those who sat for the first gaokao since its resumption in 1977, it was that exam. To say that the college entrance exam changed their lives would be an understatement. Here are some well-known people who took the gaokao in 1977 and 1978.

Premier Li Keqiang was sent to work as an "educated youth" at a village in Fengyang county, Anhui province, in 1974. He was among the 5.7 million people who took the first gaokao after a more than 10-year suspension in 1977 and was admitted to Peking University's Law School.
