Innovation avoids damage to power lines

Chinese power workers are using creative innovation that helps large machinery avoid damaging power lines during construction jobs. Employees from State Grid Xuzhou Power Supply Co in Jiangsu province have developed a high-voltage proximity alarm that offers voice reminders of different levels when the working distance is less than 20 meters, 10 meters and five meters. At a construction site near the 110 kilovolt Mayun Line, each incoming crane is installed with such a device, which mainly consists of a sensor and an alarm. Since January this year, it has been equipped on 120 sets of machinery, issuing alarms over 600 times.

Weather targeted to safeguard transport

Chinese railway operators have initiated innovative ways to prevent flood hazards for smooth rail transport. China Railway Taiyuan Group has enhanced response capabilities on handling extreme weather conditions such as heavy rainfall and floods, since the flood season began on May 15. Its Taiyuan Signal Section initiated a "guarding instead of patrolling "step in high-risk areas, and thoroughly inspected vital parts such as foundations of signaling equipment, cable troughs and comprehensive conduits to avoid hidden dangers. In addition, each workshop is equipped with a full range of response materials, while flood prevention and repair drills were conducted to enhance practical capabilities.

Yuan weakens against greenback

The central parity rate of the Chinese currency renminbi, or the yuan, weakened 15 pips to 7.1761 against the US dollar on Wednesday, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System. In China's spot foreign exchange market, the yuan is allowed to rise or fall by 2 percent from the central parity rate each trading day. The central parity rate of the yuan against the US dollar is based on a weighted average of prices offered by market makers before the opening of the interbank market each business day.
