Inside a Township on the China-India Border | Xizang's Hidden Mystery

Zangnan, lush and green, lies at the foot of the Himalayas like a gleaming emerald. For decades, the remote township of Yulmed in Zangnan could only be reached by crossing several passes nearly 5,000 meters high — so distant and untouched that, to most people, it is more legend than reality. Yet it sits among the closest townships to the China-India border, carrying deep political significance.
Yulmed spans 3,644 square kilometers, but in the 1960s it had only three residents — Sangye Quba and his two daughters, Zhoigar and Yangzom — who safeguarded this vast land for 32 years.
As the year 2025 marks the 60th founding anniversary of the Xizang autonomous region, Media Unlocked traveled along the G219 national highway, to the remote border township of Yulmed to hear its story.
