Luxury brand Miu Miu announced on Aug 21 that acclaimed French filmmaker Alice Diop will direct the 30th chapter of the Miu Miu Women's Tales film series with her episode Fragments for Venus. The short film is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival's Giornate degli Autori on Saturday.

Diop is renowned for her incisive documentaries focusing on marginalized communities, such as La Permanence and Vers la tendresse. Her fiction directorial debut, Saint Omer (2022)—inspired by a real-life infanticide trial—claimed major awards at the Venice Film Festival. With echoes of Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, the film is a formally rigorous meditation on motherhood, migration and justice, described by fellow filmmaker Céline Sciamma as a "cinematic poem".?

"I've been making films from the margins, with a political intention of filming those margins, because those are the people I come from. That's my territory, my history," said Diop. "Fragments for Venus is an essential film to make at this time. It is my most simple and radical work to date."

Launched over 15 years ago, the Miu Miu Women's Tales series has grown into the longest-running commissioning platform for female-led short films, encompassing 30 unique episodes to date. Helmed by some of today's most distinctive female directors, each installment crafts a vivid, relevant narrative shaped by women's unique perspectives.
