China's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that Beijing hopes that societal issues in Nepal can be handled in a way that allows for the restoration of social order and national stability as soon as possible.

Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday after demonstrations and violent clashes swept the country.

"China and Nepal are traditional friendly neighbors," Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Wednesday.

China has reminded Chinese citizens in Nepal to pay attention to their safety, he said at a daily news conference in Beijing.
