China warns against escalating tensions in Afghanistan

Foreign Ministry reiterated respect for Afghanistan's sovereignty on Friday, warning that escalating tensions and confrontations in the region are unpopular.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian made the remarks after it was reported that US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States is "trying" to get the former US Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan "back" from the Taliban.
"China respects Afghanistan's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and believes that the future and destiny of Afghanistan should be in the hands of the Afghan people," Lin said at a daily news briefing.
"Escalating tensions and creating confrontations in the region are unpopular," he said, expressing hope that all parties will play a constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability.
