Migrant workers toil long hours, paid little

About half of farmer migrant workers work more than nine hours a day, State Council research has found.

Of those surveyed by the Chinese Cabinet, 22.5 percent work more than 10 hours a day, and 23.48 percent between nine and 10 hours. Another 40.3 percent work between eight and nine hours each day. Only 13.7 percent work less than eight hours, reported Xinhua news agency, citing the research.

The news report didn't say how many migrant workers responded to the questionnaire.

The research also found 39.26 percent are paid between 500 yuan and 800 yuan a month. The report said 29.26 percent earned between 300 and 500 yuan, 27.9 percent earned more than 800 yuan, and 3.58 percent made less than 300 yuan. Only 47.8 percent of the migrant workers surveyed said they are paid on time.

The research found 15.68 percent of farmer workers don't know what's a labor contract.
