GUANGZHOU -- A bridge whose collapse killed nine people two years ago in south China's Guangdong Province was put into use again Wednesday after repairing.

The renovation project on the Jiujiang bridge spanning the Xijiang River in Foshan City took two years at a cost of 140 million yuan (US$20 million), said a spokesman with the Xijiang River Waterway Bureau based in Zhaoqing City.

Traffic resumed on the bridge Wednesday, the spokesman said.

The Jiujiang bridge collapsed on June 15, 2007, after a cargo vessel ploughed into a section of the 1,600-meter-long bridge. Four cars plunged into the river and nine people were killed. An investigation proved that the design of the bridge was not faulty.

The Xijiang River Waterway Bureau also issued an announcement Wednesday, reminding vessel captains of strictly following the bureau's regulations while navigating under the bridge.
