The least liveable city on Earth, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit, is Damascus. Given the horror and hardship Syria has witnessed in recent times, few would disagree. Lagos, Nigeria; Tripoli, Libya; Dhaka, Bangladesh and Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea complete the bottom five.

That's according to The Safe Cities Index 2017, produced by The Economist Intelligence Unit. The Japanese capital, number one in the last Safe Cities Index, held onto the top spot with an overall score of 89.8. Of the four main categories, it came first for digital security, second for health security, fourth for personal security and 12th for infrastructure security. Singapore and Osaka came second and third overall.

There may well be less safe cities around the world, but of the 60 to feature in the Safe Cities Index, Karachi came bottom, followed by Yangon, Dhaka, Jakarta and Ho Chi Minh City.

Fastest growing: Suzhou, China, and Batam, Indonesia

Suzhou is the most rapidly expanding city (in terms of population) with at least five million residents, according to the United Nations 2010-2020 predicted growth rates. When the bar is lowered to include cities with a population above one million, Batam takes the biscuit.
