The report ‘Better Health for London’ says more than 8,000 people in the capital die prematurely for smoking each year. And that the habit is taken up by around 67 London schoolchildren every day.
It recommends that smoking is banned in all 20,000 acres of parkland in London as well as open spaces such as Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square.
The Chief Medical Officer, Professor Sally Davis, says she welcomes any proposals which reduce smoking. But Simon Clark of the pro-smoking group Forest has described them as outrageous.
Lord Dazi says the plan could be a model for cities across the country.
