Fang Chun was squinting into a telescope, carefully watching flying birds vanish into a boundless stretch of reedy marshland.

He stopped from time to time to snap photos.

Fang is no ordinary birdwatcher.

His job is to monitor avian activity at Wild Duck Lake National Wetland Park in suburban Beijing's Yanqing district.

He's proud to have discovered more than seven species previously undetected in the region over the past decade.

"Patience is important," he says.
