About 830m internet users in China, 610m online shoppers


The number of internet users has surged to 830 million in 2018 from 620,000 in 1997, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
On Tuesday, the NBS released a report on China's achievements on economic and social development since the People's Republic of China was founded 70 years ago.
Telecommunication industry has been developing fast in 70 years. In 2018, the traffic consumption of mobile internet reached 71.1 billion GB, 56.1 times of the amount in 2013. At the end of 2018, 368 million people accessed internet through optical fiber and 1.17 billion people accessed it through 4G.
At the end of 2018, the number of telephone users was 1.75 billion, ranking top of the world. The number of mobile internet users (3G and 4G) doubled to 1.31 billion in 2018 from 580 million in 2014, an average increase of 22.4 percent year-on-year.
Internet consumption unlocked residents' consumption potential. By the end of 2018, the number of internet users involved in online shopping reached 610 million, accounting for 73.6 percent of all internet users.
China's express business has remained the top of the world after it surpassed the US in 2014. At the end of 2018, the number of express delivery rocketed to 50.7 billion from 1.53 million in 1988.
