Shanghai Open University launched its first AI video creation workshop on Aug 9, attracting a diverse group of participants, from young professionals to elderly retirees.

The course runs until 17, focusing on practical skills in AI video creation. Participants will learn to use various AI tools such as Dreamina, KLING, VIdu, Doubao, Jianying, ComfyUI and Photoshop, covering the entire process from idea generation to final production.

The workshop is led by Hu Mei, a national first-class director with China Film Group Corporation, known for her works like "Yongzheng Dynasty" and "Qiao's Grand Courtyard". She highlighted the program's distinction from typical AI short video courses by aiming to explore industry-grade AI film and television standards. Exceptional works by participants may be featured on professional platforms like TV stations. The program aims to evolve, providing a broader platform for participants to create AI micro-dramas, TV series and theatrical films.

A survey by SOU on AI film and television education in Shanghai showed that while 75.94 percent of respondents are interested in AI video creation, 58.75 percent have never used related tools, and 67.42 percent have basic or no skills. This highlights a gap between public interest and practical application in AI video technology.

Zhang Jin, vice-president of SOU, stated that AI technology profoundly impacts educational innovation and the evolution of the film and television industry. The AI Video Creation Workshop is a strategic initiative by the university's art discipline to drive digital transformation in education and an innovative effort to integrate three educational sectors. The diverse participation underscores SOU's role as a "university without walls" and a "university at citizens' doorsteps".
